Image Dimensions and Resolution
Here we're talking about how to easily check resolution and dimensions, and then manipulate them to your purposes for printing documents. We are using Adobe Photoshop for the examples below. These concepts are going to be the same however in most professional-quality image editing applications.
- Open Photoshop and open photo to be checked out
- In the menu go to Image and scoll down to Image size
Pixel Dimensions: The actual size of the photo (in pixels). This should never be higher than the original number.
Resolution: Basically equal to twice the line sceen. Newspapers usuallly use from 150–200.
Scale Styles: If checked, any styles (in layers) will be scaled with the rest of the image.
Constrain Proportions: Always have this one on. This keeps image in proportion with original size dimensions.
Resample Image: Uncheck to change resolution without effecting pixel dimesions. Check to resize photo.
Resample Image: to do, or not to do
When "Resample Image" is left unchecked, the Pixel dimensions will stay the same, even when you change the resolution. If you want to find the highest possible size of a photo at a particular resolution, leave this unchecked and change the resolution to the desired number.
Example of a low resolution photo
- Around the girl's arm there is some "noise". This will show on the printed piece.
- The vertical and horizontal lines in the house are very "jaggy". This too will show up when printed.
- Overall the image is pixelated.
